I have been using Windows 7 RC as mentioned in my last post, and while it is probably the greatest operating system ever made, it does have its share of problems, especially with anything Apple. It needs to be noted that Windows 7 RC is not the final version, so these problems may be corrected when the for sale version comes out. One of these problems is with video quality of .MOV files in Windows Media Player 12. Microsoft has finally acknowledged that it has competition in the video realm and has attempted to support .MOV files in Windows Media Player 12, but as of now, that attempt is half-hearted. These are the same video. The one on the top is in Windows Media Player 12 and the one on the bottom is in Quicktime. The difference is obvious.
Update:
I rushed to judgment here and did not give Microsoft enough credit. The problem is with playing the individual codec used in this video, which was an output of Adobe Premier, rather than a problem with playing the .MOV format in general as the codec used by my GE A730 camera works just as well in Windows Media Player 12. I dare say it even looks better in Windows Media Player 12. Great job Microsoft. Now just get all the other codecs up to par.
Final Update:
Microsoft patched the Adobe Premier codec in a recent update. Way to be on the ball Microsoft. There may be problems with the quality of other codecs, but since I don't have those in my .MOV videos, I cannot speak on those.
